A dynamic team made up of women who have survived cancer and who wish to improve their physical fitness. The dragon boat offers both the benefits of an outdoor physical activity to that of a support group.
A dragon's head adorns the boat, which sits 20 participants seated in pairs rowing to the rhythm of a drummer. Standing at the rear of the boat, the coxswain directs the ship and gives instructions from the start of the race to the finish line. The challenge for members is to maintain consistent, synchronized rowing deploying teamwork.
I was truly able to rediscover a zest for living in seeking to outdo myself with this team of cancer survivors. I drew strength from this group of women who worked together towards a common goal. The experience gave me hope for a future.
I have participated in this group adventure for the past five seasons and have found it wonderfully challenging. It strengthens self-esteem and reinforces hope in life while improving one's emotional and physical well-being. A bond quickly forms among the members of the dragon boat, making this adventure even more exciting! (You need not be an athlete to sign up.)
